🥶 Winter hasn’t even knocked yet and it’s already picking your pocket. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says households heating with oil could see spending jump 𝟐𝟏% this winter — and electric-heat homes are looking at 𝟒% higher bills.

And 𝟔𝟐% 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 say they’re more worried about affording maintenance and repairs than last year. Translation: the furnace, the roof, and the drafty windows are all coming for the same paycheck.

Take Marcus, 47, owns a brick rowhouse in Pittsburgh, heats with oil. Last winter he spent about $𝟐,𝟒𝟎𝟎 keeping the place warm. A 𝟐𝟏% jump puts him near $𝟐,𝟗𝟎𝟎 — that’s $𝟓𝟎𝟎 he doesn’t have sitting around. So now he’s choosing between the heating bill and the credit card minimum. That’s how winter turns a tight budget into a broke one.

𝐅𝐢𝐱 𝐢𝐭 — do this in November, not January:

1. 𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐍𝐎𝐖. Take last winter’s heating total, add 𝟐𝟏%, and divide by five months. That’s your new monthly line item. No surprises.

2. 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬. Weatherstripping, door sweeps, plastic on the windows — $𝟓𝟎 in supplies can shave real dollars off every bill.

3. 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫. A struggling furnace burns more fuel to do less work. Maintenance is cheaper than emergency repairs at midnight in February.

4. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐮𝐩 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐨𝐰. If the furnace dies in February, the emergency repair costs double. Get a quote on a service plan while companies are hungry for fall business — it’s cheaper than panic-priced parts in a cold snap.

𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞: You can’t control the price of oil. You can control the envelope it heats and the budget it hits. Winterize your wallet before winter invoices it.
