Blue Wave in Congress: Democrats Take Both Chambers

Play now: Blue Wave in Congress video

Blue wave in Congress. Democrats win control of both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House. Per the AP tracker this morning — these are projections, not certified results.

In the Senate, Democrats take the majority — a surprise flip. Before the vote: Republicans 53, Democrats 47. Now: Democrats 54, Republicans 44, with Alaska and Mississippi still uncalled. Democrats took 7 GOP-held seats: Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. They only needed a net gain of 4.

In the House, Democrats win control. Before: Republicans 218, Democrats 214, one independent, two vacancies. Now: Democrats at least 228 — the AP called the chamber for them early this morning, and the final number is still counting. NBC’s estimate runs as high as 258 to 177. They only needed a net gain of 3.

Hakeem Jeffries is set to become the first Black Speaker of the House.

Proof people are tired of Trump politics. Voters rejected the GOP in key Senate and House races. Democrats flipped 7 Republican Senate seats — far more than expected. A blue wave in both chambers, not just the House. The message is clear: Americans are ready for a change from the chaos and division of Trump’s politics.

The bottom line: a blue wave in both chambers. Democrats’ new Senate majority is the surprise — most analysts expected only the House to flip.
